[RDD] Centralized RD System?
A crazy thought just entered my mind. Has anyone considered a centralized type RD system? I'm thinking of one "superserver" that would hold all audio, database, etc. plus all the audio cards. Then have workstations run the apps remotely, like X over ssh. The workstation could be a pretty light weight machine running an X server. You could even use (gasp!) a windoze machine as a workstation, running Putty or the like and run the app via the ssh tunnel. I know I can VPN into our LAN and ssh -X to an RD machine and run RDCatch, RDAdmin and RDLibrary. I never tried to play audio, however.
The first issue I see is that some RD apps, like RDAirplay, will only run one instance on a workstation. That might be overcome by using a bunch of VMs for each workstation. The other issue I see is the audio cards. I don't know how interfacing the audio cards or other hardware with VMs works.
You could have one or two nice multi-core mega-servers connected by fibre channel to a SAN with a couple TB of storage.
Just some thoughts for those who like challenging projects.
Michael
